The Smoking Ban

I would like to know what the customers of Charlies think re the smoking ban.I get mixed views from people coming from Ireland and the Uk, both smokers and non-smokers. I was talking to a lady from Macroom in County Cork about this in Charlies the other night and we both agreed, being smokers, that too much smoke isn’t pleasant regardless of whether you smoke or not. We also agreed that smoking a cigarette outside Charlies is no problem because it’s warm in Lanzarote and there is a terrace with seats there. We also agreed that a lot of the craic is now *outside* the pubs in Ireland because you get to talk to people that you wouldn’t have otherwise met. But the weather is shit at home and you freeze!

I came up with the idea that maybe when the Charlies inside gets too smoky we should announce from the stage that for the remainder of the night we would appreciate if people could smoke outside.

Let´s hold a poll with the following questions:

1) Are you a smoker or non-smoker?

2) Should we ban smoking in Charlies completely?

3) Should we run with my idea?

4) Or should we leave well alone as is?

Right, I’m off to Charlies now for a pint and a smoke, adios!

P.S. There´s also a proper POLL that you can vote on re. this subject, on the front page of the Charlies website….

  1. I like the idea of having a separate area for smokers, maybe the bit near the stage should be non-smoking and round the bar smoking? Probably wouldn´t work though, people would be cheeky and smoke in other parts too… ;)

  2. As a dedicated smoker for the past 26 years with only the odd lapse when I was ill,I believe that smoking should be outlawed in all indoor public areas. Not only for the health risks’ but it’s really obscene to force on others your exhaled smoke. If someone sat next to you in a restaurant and tried to convert you to their faith eg;Mormon,Jehova’s Witness or even Muslim it’s the same as smoking next to them because you’re forcing your own personal ideals on them .Everyone has the right answer they just don’t realize it only applies to them .Freedom for all comes at the very high price of accepting all others for who they are and what they resolutely believe in .Peace and love In a cloud of smoke, Yeah Man!

  3. Jon Gold: To use culture or faith/religion as a comparison to smoking in the same breath is such a bad idea! I already had a go at Murphy for using this as a comparison because smoking is an ADDICTION, and someone´s faith/religion is NOT (although some say religion is an addiction too!). I find it a rather pointless comparison. I´m sure there are better comparisons you can come up with…

  6. Murphy: Religion is certainly NOT a pleasure in my books. Slating religion is though, hehe. ;)

As for Jon being ill, the first couple of years of giving up smoking I was more ill than I was before too. Guess it´s 15 years of smoking that takes a whole 2 years or so to get properly out of your system. Or something.

  9. Dear Jesus, as we gather here today we ask you today to remember the souls of Alan O´Meara, Tim O´Looney and German Jim, all whose anniversaries occur around this time. May they be rewarded their just place in Heaven for keeping all the families of the tobbacco pickers fed, watered and educated and for keeping peace in the world by not going to mass!
